Kloof at a Glance
Kloof is a leafy property suburb that includes a smaller area called Everton, in the greater Durban area of eThekwini in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
The word Kloof means 'gorge' in Afrikaans and the area is named after the deep ravine formed by the Molweni stream (stream of high cliffs). The Kloof Gorge is part of the 4.5 square kilometer Krantzkloof Nature Reserve.
The suburb extends westward from the top of Field's Hill and Kloof properties border the suburbs of Winston Park, Gillitts, Forest Hills and Hillcrest. These property suburbs are collectively known as the Upper Highway Area or the Outer West region of Durban.
The M13 highway intersects Kloof and on the 16 June each year forms part of the route of the annual Comrades Marathon, an approximately 90 kilometres ultra-marathon run between Pietermaritzburg and Durban since 1924.
Kloof is a predominantly English-speaking area featuring several upmarket shopping centres and the Kloof Country Club, founded in 1927. The Kloof property market is known for its winding roads and tree-surrounded mansions.
Homes are tasteful and gardens abundant - it's obvious why Kloof property owners have chosen to live here and are prepared to commute to the city in order to benefit from the sheer natural beauty of the area. Kloof properties prices range from R 900,000 for an entry level townhouse to over R8,000,000 for a stately home at one of Kloof's more elite addresses. Abrey Road and Haygarth Road are two such addresses in the Kloof property market with large properties boasting luscious, spacious gardens and expansive views of the golf course and valley. A limited number of office park developments and apartments have recently sprouted in the Kloof property market.
